Where it comes from
From Yohanan to Jean
The story of Jean
The root is the Hebrew Yohanan, carried into Greek as Ioannes by the translators of the scriptures and into Latin as Iohannes, from where it spread across Christian Europe. Old French turned it into Jehan, and Jehan wore down to Jean, the standard French form of John from the medieval period onward. That is the road to the boy's name. English-speaking girls named Jean came by a parallel route: the Old French feminine Jehanne, shortened in Scotland to Jean and pronounced JEEN — which is why one spelling in the United States can mean two quite different names.

Pronouncing Jean
zhahn
French Jean is one syllable, zh- as in "measure", with a nasal vowel English does not have; American speakers usually land on "zhahn". The English and Scottish women's Jean is JEEN. Two names, one spelling, two pronunciations — worth stating which one you mean the first time.

The Noble test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jean's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Noble climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Noble's path sketches the road Jean is walking now.
Jean is on its second act. Revived names age gently: the generation that wore them first is far enough away that the name feels classic rather than dated.

The trade-off
- Four letters, one syllable, and a spelling most English speakers have already seen — the pronunciation may need saying, but the spelling rarely does.
- Belongs to one of the largest name families in the world: John, Juan, Giovanni, Johannes, João, Ivan. It has a local form almost anywhere.
- A continuous written record from medieval France to now, with no gap and no revival needed.
- In French use it heads the compound names Jean-Luc, Jean-Paul and Jean-Baptiste, which gives a family room to lengthen it later.
- In American English, Jean is widely read as a woman's name pronounced JEEN. A boy named Jean will meet that assumption on rosters, forms and first meetings. It is easily corrected, but it will need correcting often.
- The French nasal vowel does not exist in English, so strangers will offer "zhahn", "john" or "jeen". Deciding early which version the family will answer to saves years of small negotiations.
- Written down, it is also the ordinary English word for denim cloth — rarely a problem in speech, occasionally a joke in writing.
- Currently uncommon enough that a child will likely be the only one in a school — though it is a familiar name rather than an unknown one, which makes the rarity easy to carry.
