Jazmen
Feminine · “the jasmine flower”
Jazmen is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 1,074 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Jazmen writes a Persian flower with an American ending, and the flower it writes is one of the most valuable crops in the world by weight. Jasmine has to be picked by hand before sunrise, because the scent goes out of it in daylight, and it takes several thousand flowers to make a single gram of the absolute that perfumers use.

The story of Jazmen
The economics of jasmine explain why it is a luxury word. The flowers open at night and lose their scent within a few hours of dawn, so the picking is done between about three and eight in the morning, by hand, flower by flower, because the blossoms bruise. The fields around Grasse in southern France and in Egypt and India supply most of it. A famous French perfume is said to contain the flowers of several hundred jasmine blossoms in every bottle, and the reason nobody has replaced the crop with a laboratory copy is that the natural material contains a great many compounds in proportions that have never been fully reproduced.
Meaning
the jasmine flower
The word came into English through French from Arabic and before that from Persian, where it named the plant. The spelling here changes the ending from ine to en, which does not alter the sound at all — both write the same weak final syllable — and changes the s to a z, which does not alter it either, because the s in the standard spelling is voiced anyway. The name is one of the more heavily respelled in the American record, and this is one of the plainer variants.
How the name formed

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The final syllable is weak enough that ine, in, en and yn all write it equally well, which is why the family has so many spellings.

Fashion outlook
Jazmen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is completely familiar and needs no explanation anywhere in the world.
- Jaz is a ready-made short form that works from a playground to an office.
- The flower behind it is genuinely lovely and genuinely valuable, which most flower names cannot claim.
- There are at least eight spellings in circulation and she will be given all of them.
- The ending is an English word on its own, which older children will notice.
- It is closely dated to the last two decades of the century.
