Where it comes from

The story of Jasmaine

The flower came first and the name followed it, which is the usual order for flower names. What is less widely known is that the jasmine in the teapot and the jasmine in the perfume bottle are two different plants. Tea is scented with Jasminum sambac, a small-leaved shrub whose flowers are layered in with the tea overnight and taken out in the morning, sometimes several nights running. Perfume uses Jasminum grandiflorum, a larger-flowered climber grown for its oil, and it does not smell the same. Two people who know jasmine, one from tea and one from scent, are not thinking of the same thing. Whether this particular spelling was built from Jasmine alone, or under the pull of Jermaine and Charmaine, which were in the record at the same moment, is not something anyone wrote down.

Meaning

jasmine, the flower

The flower's name came into English from French jasmin, which took it from Arabic, which took it from Persian. The reading is settled and has never been in dispute.

Jasmaine sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1991, with 68 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Jasmaine sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The flower is real, the meaning is settled, and both are easy to explain to a child who asks.
  • The name behind it is known in a dozen languages, so it travels without needing translation.
  • Jaz comes off the front as a short form and requires no introduction anywhere.
What to consider
  • Jasmine is by far the commonest spelling, and this one will be corrected to it constantly.
  • The -aine ending pulls the pronunciation toward jaz-MAYN, so the name gets said two ways and neither is wrong.
  • This spelling is recorded for boys as well as girls, and in recent years more often for boys, which forms and software will not expect.
