Jasiel comes out of the Hebrew Bible, where a warrior in King David's company is listed in the Book of Chronicles under this name. It traveled into Spanish-speaking use with the J intact and the Hebrew rhythm mostly preserved — three beats ending on that bright -el that closes Gabriel, Daniel and Miguel. Its American wave is a young one, carried largely by families in California, Texas and Florida.

Where it comes from

The story of Jasiel

The name belongs to the long lists of the Book of Chronicles, where Jasiel the Mesobaite closes the roll of David's mighty men, and where a Jaasiel son of Abner is named as a leader of Benjamin. From Hebrew Yaasiel the name passed through Greek and Latin scripture into the vernacular Bibles of Europe, and the King James translators printed it as Jasiel. The Spanish Reina-Valera tradition kept a close cousin, Jaasiel, and it is from Spanish-speaking Catholic and Protestant families — in Mexico especially — that the modern given name grew. Its arrival in American records tracks that route, concentrated in the states with the deepest Mexican-American communities.

Meaning

God makes, or God's handiwork

The name joins the Hebrew verb 'asah, to make or to do, with El, God. English Bibles render the same figure as Jaasiel or Jasiel; translators give it as "God makes" or "whom God created."

Pronouncing Jasiel

hah-see-EL

That is the Spanish reading, with the stress on the last syllable. English speakers commonly say JAY-see-el or JAH-see-el instead, and both are heard from bearers in the US — worth deciding early which one your family will use.

#169
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jasiel went to 398 boys in 2025, but Jaziel, Jaciel and Jaaziel and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 2,276, which makes it the 169th most-given boys’ name of the year — 514 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 750 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 4,292 for Jasiel itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented biblical name, printed in English Bibles since the King James translation, so it has a written record centuries deep rather than a recent invention.
  • Works in both Spanish and English without changing spelling, which matters in bilingual families.
  • Sits in the well-known -el family of Daniel, Gabriel and Miguel, so the shape and ending are already familiar to most people.
  • Has ready short forms — Jasi, Jas, Jay — so a child is not stuck with only the full name.
What to consider
  • Two live pronunciations, Spanish and English, mean your child will spend a lifetime correcting or accepting whichever one they did not choose. Some bearers simply use both depending on the room.
  • It competes with several near-neighbors in spelling — Jassiel, Yasiel, Jaziel, Jahziel — so expect to spell it out often, even to people who have heard it before.
  • The name's American use is very recent and concentrated in a few states, so outside those regions many people will meet it for the first time in your child.
  • On the upside of that rarity: he is unlikely ever to share it in a classroom, and the name is short and phonetic enough that most people get it on the second try.
