Where it comes from

The story of Jarret

The French word is worth knowing about because it explains the surname. A jarret is the hollow behind the knee, and by extension the hock of an animal and the cut of meat from it — jarret de veau is on menus all over France. Names of that kind became surnames readily in medieval France, applied to butchers, to people with a notable gait, or as plain nicknames. The English Jarrett is more likely to descend from Garrett, which is itself two Germanic names that fell together in Norman French. Both roads end in the same American spelling, and the first name is a twentieth-century arrival in either case.

Meaningscholars disagree

spear-strong, or spear-rule

If the name goes back to Garrett, it descends from one of two Germanic names that collapsed together, one ending in hard and one in wald. If it came in from Jared, the source is Hebrew and entirely different. The record does not distinguish them.

Fashion outlook

Jarret sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both syllables are ordinary in English and the name is read correctly at sight.
  • Rett is a ready short form with a life of its own.
  • It works as a surname and as a first name, which suits families that use both.
What to consider
  • Jarrett, Garrett and Jarret are all live spellings and all will be written for you.
  • Its parentage is honestly double, so a family cannot be told which line is theirs.
  • It reads as a name of the second half of the twentieth century.
