Our story of Jaquita
Joseph-Marie Jacquard built a loom attachment that took its instructions from a chain of stiff cards with holes punched in them. Where there was a hole a hook passed through and lifted a thread; where there was no hole it did not. Any pattern at all could be woven by anyone, without a skilled draw-boy sitting inside the loom, and the silk weavers of Lyon rioted about it. Charles Babbage owned a woven portrait of Jacquard made on one of his own looms and took the punched card idea straight into his design for a calculating engine, from which it passed to census tabulating machines and then to the punched cards that fed computers for most of the twentieth century. A loom taught the machines how to be programmed.
