Where it comes from

Our story of Jannice

The temple of Janus in the Roman Forum had doors that were opened when the state was at war and shut when it was at peace, and the Romans recorded, with some embarrassment, how rarely they were shut. Livy names only a couple of closings in the whole republican period; Augustus made a point of shutting them three times in his own reign and put it in his list of achievements, precisely because it was so unusual. The god himself faces both ways, which is why the first month looks back at the old year and forward at the new, and why he was invoked at the start of any undertaking. A doorway that is a war memorial in reverse is a Roman idea and has no real modern equivalent.

The name it varies is usually treated as an extension of Jane, though a novelist has also been credited with coining it. Neither account is documented well enough to settle, and this spelling adds a letter to whichever is right.

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The doubled n keeps the first vowel short, which the single-n spelling manages anyway.

Jannice sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1960, with 30 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Jannice sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Jan detaches cleanly and works for a child of either sex.
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
What to consider
  • Janice, Janis and Janiece are all commoner and will be written for it.
  • The doubled letter is inaudible, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • The name it varies has two proposed origins and neither is settled.
