Where it comes from

The story of Janne

Johannes, the Latin John, produced short forms all over Scandinavia, and the same shortening landed on opposite sides of the line in different countries. Swedes and Finns use Janne for men: the Finnish ski jumper Janne Ahonen and the Swedish football coach Janne Andersson both carry it. Norwegians and Danes use it for women, as the Danish writer Janne Teller does. The American Janne may come from the Norwegian or Danish name or be a spelling of Jane or Jan with a final e, and the record does not say which.

Meaning

God is gracious (through Johannes and Johanne)

Both the man's and the woman's Janne go back to Johannes, the Latin form of Hebrew Yohanan, God is gracious; the woman's comes through its feminine, Johanne.

Pronouncing Janne

YAH-neh

In Norwegian and Danish, two syllables with the stress on the first and the J said like y. An American family may say it JAN or JAN-ee instead, and the spelling allows both.

Janne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1951, with 21 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Janne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A standing woman's name in Norway and Denmark, with well-known living bearers.
  • Shares the long history and meaning of John and Johanna.
  • Short and easy to write.
What to consider
  • In Finland and Sweden it is a man's name, so a Janne will sometimes be taken for a man in Nordic company or correspondence.
  • Americans will not know whether to say YAH-neh, JAN or JANE; the family's choice needs saying once, and then it holds.
