The story of Janetta
Janet is the older English member of this family and the most interesting. It is Scottish rather than English in origin, a diminutive formed the way Scots forms them, and it was one of the standard names for Scottish women for something like three centuries — the name in the ballad of Tam Lin, the name of queens' attendants and merchants' daughters through the whole early modern period. When English wanted a longer version it had two models available, the Italian -etta and the French -ette, and used both. Janetta is the Italian shape on an English base, which is why it looks continental and has no continental history.
