Where it comes from

The story of Janene

France made Janine from Jeanne with a diminutive ending that French has used for centuries, and English-speaking families borrowed the finished name in the twentieth century. Janene took a different road. The -ene ending was one of the most productive things in American naming between the wars, attaching itself to Charles, Earl, Karl, Laura and Cora, and it attached itself to Jane too. The two names arrived in the American record within a few years of each other from opposite directions and have been treated as spelling variants ever since, which they are not: one is a borrowing and one is a construction.

Fashion outlook

Janene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at sight by anyone who has met either spelling.
  • Jan is a ready short form with a long history of its own.
  • It is the fuller written form of Jane without being a different name.
What to consider
  • Janine is the commoner spelling and will be written instead.
  • The -ene ending places the name firmly in the middle of the twentieth century.
  • Jeanine, Janeen and Jannine are all in the record and are confused with it constantly.
