Where it comes from

The story of Jan

John was the most-given man's name in Europe for a thousand years, and the Low Countries and Poland both settled on Jan as the ordinary form — Jan van Eyck, Jan Sobieski. Dutch and Polish emigration brought it to America, where it appears in the registers as a man's name throughout, peaking around 1955 even as the feminine Jan was much commoner.

Meaning

God is gracious

From the Hebrew Yohanan — 'the Lord is gracious' — through the Latin Johannes. Dutch, Polish, Czech and the Scandinavian languages all contracted Johannes to Jan, which is the standard form in each. The meaning has never been in doubt.

Jan sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1951, with 732 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jan went to 47 boys in 2025, but Jaan is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 52, which makes it the 876th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,842 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 32,848 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 36,342 for Jan itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is the standard form of John across four European languages.
  • Three letters, one syllable, and never misspelled.
  • It carries a very large and well-documented body of European bearers.
What to consider
  • In American English the spelling reads as feminine and is said quite differently.
  • The continental and English pronunciations are far apart.
