Jammie is Jamie with a doubled m, and the doubling lands it exactly on an English word: jammies, the thing a child changes into at night. That is either a charm or a problem, depending on the family, and it is the first thing anyone notices.

Where it comes from

The story of Jammie

The word behind the joke has a longer journey than the name does. Persian pay-jama means leg garment, a pair of loose trousers tied at the waist, worn across South Asia long before any European saw them. British residents in India adopted them for sleeping, brought the habit home in the nineteenth century, and English took the word with the garment, first as pyjama and then, in America, as pajama. Children shortened it to jammies. Jammie the name arrived independently, as a respelling of Jamie in the decades when American parents were doubling consonants freely, and the collision is entirely accidental.

Meaning

supplanter, one who takes the heel

Jamie is the Scots familiar form of James, and James carries the meaning of the Hebrew Yaakov unchanged through Greek and Latin. The doubled m is a spelling choice and adds nothing.

Two syllables, weight at the front, said exactly like Jamie. Read strictly the doubled m would shorten the first vowel to JAM-ee, and a few families do say it that way.

Jammie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1977, with 262 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Jammie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Said aloud it is a familiar name that needs no explanation.
  • It works for a child and for an adult without changing shape.
  • Jay is a ready short form that sidesteps the spelling entirely.
What to consider
  • The word jammies is unavoidable, and a child will hear it.
  • Jamie is the standard spelling and will be written instead.
  • The spelling is recorded for boys as well as girls in the United States, so on paper it does not settle which child is meant.
