Where it comes from

Our story of Jamisha

English has a jam you spread and a jam you get stuck in, and it has a jamb, which is the upright post at the side of a door. The last of those is easy: it came from French jambe, a leg, because the posts stand like legs at the sides of an opening — the same word behind the jamboree of a ham and behind gambol, which is a leg movement. The first two are harder. The verb, meaning to press or wedge, appears in the eighteenth century with no traceable parent and is usually put down to sound symbolism; the preserve appears slightly later and is generally taken to be the same word, on the reasoning that fruit is crushed to make it. Neither has been proved. One of the commonest words on an English breakfast table has an origin that dictionaries describe as unknown.

The front is the name James, whose own descent is documented back to Hebrew. The ending is a free American suffix used across a large family of names in the same decades. Nothing records what the family meant by joining them, and the compound has no source of its own.

Pronouncing Jamisha

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The i in the middle is carrying the long vowel, which is the one thing the spelling could be read two ways about.

Jamisha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1991, with 51 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Jamisha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the most comfortable rhythm English has.
  • Misha detaches cleanly and is a complete name in its own right.
  • The father's name is visible inside it, which is the point of the build.
What to consider
  • Jameisha, Jamesha and Jamisha are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The spelling has to be given aloud every time.
  • Only the front carries a meaning, and it carries it at several removes.
