Jamilet
Feminine · “beautiful”
Jamilet is an Arabic name wearing a French ending, and Spanish is the one that put them together. The -et and -ette endings came into Spanish from French, where they make a name smaller and fonder, and Spanish-speaking families in the Americas have used them freely on names from anywhere. Underneath is one of the most ordinary and most complimentary words in Arabic.

The story of Jamilet
Arabic naming reached the Spanish-speaking world twice: once through eight centuries of Muslim rule in Iberia, which left a very large vocabulary behind, and again through modern Arab migration to Latin America, which was substantial in Mexico, Colombia and the southern cone. Jamila belongs to that stock. Adding a French diminutive to it is a purely American move, and this name appears in United States records from the late 1980s, concentrated in California. It is a small piece of three-way linguistic history on a birth certificate.
Meaning
beautiful
From the Arabic jamila, the feminine of jamil, which is the everyday adjective for beautiful. The -et ending adds affection rather than meaning; it is the same suffix behind Ivette, Jeanette and Colette, borrowed into Spanish from French.

The Robbye test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jamilet's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Robbye climbed just as high around 1913, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Robbye's path sketches the road Jamilet is walking now.
Jamilet sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The Arabic word behind it is clean, positive and easy to explain in one word.
- It works in Spanish and English without respelling, though not with the same sound.
- Three short forms are available and they belong to different languages.
- Yamileth is the commoner Spanish spelling and will be written instead by many.
- The Spanish and English pronunciations diverge completely at the first letter.
- Jamileth, Jamilette and Yamilet all appear in records, so the spelling has to be dictated.
