Jamesia adds a Latin-looking ending to a man's name whole, without cutting anything, which is the older of the two American ways of building a daughter's name from a father's. The word its front approaches is one English cannot account for at all.

Where it comes from

Our story of Jamesia

Nobody knows where jamboree comes from. It turns up in nineteenth-century American English meaning a noisy party or a spree, and every proposed derivation has failed: a blend of jabber and shivaree, a Hindi or Swahili word, a corruption of something French. Dictionaries say origin unknown. What is documented is the second half of its career. When Baden-Powell organized the first international Scout gathering in nineteen twenty, he called it a Jamboree, and when asked why he reportedly said that the word meant what he wanted it to mean and he had chosen it deliberately. The Scout movement has used it ever since for its world gatherings, which has given a word with no traceable past a completely fixed modern meaning — the reverse of the usual order.

The front is the name James, whose descent from Hebrew through Latin is documented. The ending imitates a Latin feminine and carries nothing here. What a family meant by the combination is not recorded.

Jamesia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1995, with 38 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Jamesia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The father's name is fully visible in it, which is the point of the build.
  • Several short forms come out of it at different cuts.
  • The stress falls where an English reader expects it.
What to consider
  • Jamesha, Jamisia and Jameisha are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The syllable count is unstable, so the name gets said two ways.
  • Only the front carries a meaning, and the ending has none at all.
