Jameka is regularly assumed to be a form of Jamaica and it is not. The two are close on paper and further apart than they look: the island's name is an Arawak word that Spanish wrote down at the end of the fifteenth century, and this name is an American construction of the nineteen seventies, built out of a prefix and an ending that were both in wide use at the time.

How old is the name Jameka?

Jameka first appears in US birth records in 1972 — 53 years ago. The typical Jameka alive today was born around 1989, making them about 36 years old. About 1,600 people named Jameka are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Jameka most popular?

Jameka peaked in 1978, reaching #1434 nationally. See the whole 1978 chart.

Where it comes from

Our story of Jameka

The island is worth being accurate about, since the question always comes up. Columbus recorded the Taino name as Xaymaca, and what it meant is disputed: land of springs is the reading most often preferred by people who work on the language, and land of wood and water is the version that circulates everywhere else, including in Jamaica. Neither can be confirmed, because Taino is reconstructed from wordlists made by people who did not speak it. That is a real etymological problem with real scholarship behind it. This name has nothing to do with any of it. It belongs to a large and well-documented American naming practice, in which a small stock of prefixes and a small stock of endings were combined and recombined by thousands of families independently, producing hundreds of names that look related and are not descended from one another. Saying so plainly is better than accepting a Caribbean etymology the name never had.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No meaning can be given. The front is a prefix with no lexical content and the ending is one of the productive American name endings of the period, and joining two meaningless pieces does not produce a meaning. The island's name, which people reach for, is a genuinely separate word with a genuinely different history, and borrowing its translation for this name would be inventing a connection that the record does not support.

How the name formed

  1. A prefix in wide American use
  2. An ending drawn from the same stock
  3. Jameka, Tameka and Shameka in the same years
  4. The family receding together

Pronouncing Jameka

juh-MEE-kuh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle and the first reduced almost to nothing. It is one sound away from the island in speech as well as on paper, which is why the assumption is so persistent.

Jameka sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1993, with 102 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Jameka sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is transparent and nobody will need it repeated.
  • Meka is a strong short form that is not shared with a crowd.
  • It belongs clearly to a documented American naming tradition, which is a real answer to give a child.
What to consider
  • Everybody will assume the island, and the correction has to be made every time.
  • There is no meaning to give, and the tempting one belongs to a different word.
  • It is firmly of its decade, which is fine if that is the intention.
