The story of Jamarkus
Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican printer who came to New York in 1916, built the Universal Negro Improvement Association into a mass movement, and in 1919 founded the Black Star Line, a shipping company meant to carry trade and passengers between America, the Caribbean and Africa; it failed, and he was convicted of mail fraud and deported, but his ideas shaped generations. Jamarkus joins Ja- to a k-spelled Markus and belongs to the late twentieth century; nothing records that families had Garvey in mind.
