Where it comes from

Our story of Jalessa

Alas is two words. English took it from Old French a las, where the first piece is a cry — the same ah that survives in a great many exclamations — and the second is the adjective las, weary or wretched, from the Latin lassus. So the whole thing means something like ah, how weary, and it arrived already fused. The same Latin adjective gives English lassitude, which is a much later and much more respectable borrowing of exactly the same idea, and it lies behind the second half of alack as well. Exclamations tend to do this: they compress, they lose their internal grammar, and after a few centuries nobody can say what the parts were. Goodbye is God be with you. Hello is a shout for attention. Alas is a sigh with an adjective attached.

No source is documented. The prefix is a free American element and the ending came off longer names like Vanessa and Melissa. Glosses attaching this family to Arabic or Hebrew are supplied afterwards and produce no word.

Jalessa sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1988, with 150 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Jalessa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • Lessa detaches cleanly and works as a short form.
  • The spelling is phonetic and can be written from hearing.
What to consider
  • Jalisa, Jelessa and Jalyssa are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The name is firmly dated to the decades it was made in.
  • Neither element carries a meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
