The documentary evidence says otherwise: medieval English records show Jack consistently as a pet form of John, arrived at through a French diminutive, and the men called Jack in those records are John on the formal documents. The confusion is understandable and persistent, helped by the fact that Jacques in French really is James. So an English Jack and a French Jacques look like the same name and are not, which is exactly the kind of trap that makes name history a discipline rather than a hobby.
