The French couvre-chef meant a head-covering, English took it as kerchief, and then — because people were carrying a smaller one in the hand rather than wearing it — added hand to the front, producing a word that literally says hand-cover-head. It did not stop there: pocket handkerchief adds a fourth element to a word that already had three, and hanky is a clipping of a clipping, taking two syllables off a word that was built by sticking things together. English does this constantly and then forgets it has done it. A chef is the same chef, meaning head, which is why a chef runs a kitchen and a chief runs everything else; and mischief is literally coming to a bad head.
