Jaire
Masculine
Jaire is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 1,242 boys against 35 girls since 1880.
Behind this spelling stands one of the oldest short names in the Hebrew Bible: Jair, the Gileadite named in the Book of Judges, and Yair, still given in Israel today. The -e ending is an American addition, recent and rare, and it gives the name a soft landing after that bright opening syllable. It is a name with a very long past and a very short chart history — an unusual and rather appealing combination.

The story of Jaire
Yair appears in the Hebrew Bible, borne by Jair the Gileadite, who is said in the Book of Judges to have led Israel, and by the Jair named as an ancestor of Mordecai in Esther. Greek and Latin translators of scripture carried the name west as Jair, and it traveled from there into English, Spanish and Portuguese Bibles, where Jair remains a living given name — especially common in Mexico and Brazil. The Jaire spelling, with its silent final e, belongs to the United States and to recent generations; it appears in the records only in the last few decades. Its climb coincides with the prominence of NFL cornerback Jaire Alexander, who carries this exact spelling.
Meaningscholars disagree
most often read as a form of Hebrew Yair/Jair, "he shines" or "he enlightens"
Two readings compete, and both are reasonable. Read as a respelling of Jair, it carries the Hebrew sense "he shines, he gives light" — that meaning is settled for Yair and Jair themselves. Read as an American formation, it belongs to the large family of Ja- names built in the United States over the last few decades, where the sound came first and no translation was intended. Nobody has documented which road this particular spelling took.

Pronouncing Jaire
JAIR
Most American speakers say it as one syllable rhyming with "air." A two-syllable juh-AIR is also heard, and Spanish-speaking families saying Jair use hah-EER. Because no single reading has settled, expect to supply it the first time in most rooms.

The Paolo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jaire's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Paolo climbed just as high around 1983, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Paolo's path sketches the road Jaire is walking now.

The trade-off
- Short, front-stressed and quickly said, with ready-made informal forms in Jai and Jay.
- Stands on a documented ancient name — Jair and Yair — so it has real history behind a modern spelling.
- Its close relatives Jair and Yair are in everyday use in Hebrew, Spanish and Portuguese, which helps in multilingual families.
- Rare enough in the US that a child will most likely be the only one in the class.
- There is no settled pronunciation. JAIR, juh-AIR and the Spanish hah-EER all circulate, so correcting people will be a small lifelong routine.
- The silent final e will drop off in writing. Jair, Jayre and Jaire will all arrive in the mail, and forms will often need fixing.
- The name's wave is very recent, so nearly everyone carrying it is a child. That means no confusion with an older namesake, but also no adult template for how it wears.
- Some listeners will connect it straight to football. That association may fade, or it may not — either way, the biblical Jair long predates it.
