Jaimi
Feminine · “Supplanter”
Jaime and James are the same name and look nothing alike. Latin Iacomus went one way in Spanish and another in French and English, and the two ended up sharing almost no letters; a family choosing the Spanish spelling and an American ending is combining two ends of that split.

The story of Jaimi
The split happened in late Latin. The Hebrew name became Iacobus in Latin, and a variant Iacomus appeared with an m instead of a b; French developed Jacques from the first and Spanish developed Jaime from the second, while English took James from the French line by way of the Norman form. Every one of those looks like a different name and all of them are the same one, which is why the king who commissioned the English Bible is Jacobus in Latin, Jacques in French and Jaime in Spanish. The spelling here is the Spanish, with a bare i on the end that belongs to twentieth-century American naming and to nothing else.

Supplanter, by tradition
The name descends from Jacob, and the traditional reading comes from a pun inside the Hebrew text rather than from the word itself. Scholars treat the derivation as open. Spanish and English produced their forms independently from the same Latin and neither is closer to the original.

Fashion outlook
Jaimi sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spoken name is completely familiar in English and never needs repeating.
- Jai is a short, current, unisex everyday form.
- The Spanish spelling connects the name to a large tradition without changing the sound.
- Jamie, Jaime and Jaimie all circulate, so spelling it out is permanent.
- Spanish speakers will read the spelling their own way and produce a quite different name.
- It is closely dated to the middle of the last century in American records.
