Where it comes from

Our story of Jaelon

A jaeger is a hunter in German — the word behind Jägermeister, which is a master of the hunt, and behind the rifle called a Jäger that gave American gunsmiths the Kentucky long rifle. American ornithology borrowed it for a group of seabirds whose hunting method is theft. A jaeger does not fish much; it chases terns and gulls that have already caught something and harries them in the air until they drop it or vomit it up, and then catches the meal before it hits the water. The technical word for this is kleptoparasitism, and skuas and frigatebirds do the same thing. British usage calls the same birds skuas. The chase is fast, acrobatic and, from the tern's point of view, extremely persistent.

Jaelon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1999, with 53 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Jaelon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and each is a standing name.
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
What to consider
  • Jalen, Jaylon and Jaelin are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The name is firmly dated to the decades it was made in.
  • Neither element carries a meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
