The story of Jacqulin
Jaywalking is a manufactured word. As cars began killing large numbers of people in American streets in the nineteen-twenties, the public reaction was hostile to drivers, and motoring groups and dealers' associations responded with a campaign to redefine the street as a place for vehicles. Jay was slang for a hick, somebody who did not know how to behave in town; jaywalker was pushed deliberately through press campaigns, ridicule and staged events, and jaywalking laws followed. It worked. Within a generation, walking across a road had gone from ordinary behavior to an offense with a mocking name, and the responsibility for a collision had shifted from the machine to the person on foot. The word did much of the work.
