Where it comes from

The story of Jacquetta

English has no feminine of James and has to borrow one. French made Jacqueline and Jacquette from Jacques, Italian made Giacometta and Giacobbe's other relatives from Giacomo, and English — which has used James as a royal name for centuries — made nothing at all. The gap is odd enough to be worth noticing: John gave Joan, Jane, Janet and Jean, Henry gave Henrietta, Charles gave Charlotte, and James gave nothing an English speaker could use. So the feminines came in from across the Channel already assembled.

supplanter, at some distance

The Hebrew name at the root is usually read this way, and the reading is disputed. Two languages and two suffixes stand between it and this form, so the sense arrives thin.

Fashion outlook

Jacquetta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries a genuine medieval history rather than an invented one.
  • It offers short forms from either end with different registers.
  • It is long and formal without being difficult to say.
What to consider
  • The spelling has to be dictated letter by letter every time.
  • The meaning arrives at several removes and is disputed at the root.
  • It is rare enough that most people will not have met it.
