The story of Jacquelene
The cluster came from French spelling habits. French wrote qu for the k sound and kept the c that was already there, so Jacques carries a c and a q for one consonant, and the feminine inherited the whole apparatus. English took the name without simplifying it, which is why it is the only common English name that has to be spelled letter by letter every single time. The name Jacques was so ordinary in medieval France that it stopped being a name and became a word: a jaque was a padded coat worn by ordinary men, and it is the origin of the English word jacket. The ending on this spelling is not French at all. French has -ine and -ette; the -ene is an American respelling, put in to write the sound the way an English speaker hears it.

Supplanter, by tradition
The name is the French feminine of Jacques, which is the French form of Jacob, and the traditional reading of Jacob as supplanter comes from a pun made inside the Hebrew text rather than from the word itself. Scholars generally treat the real derivation as unsettled. What is certain is the family: Jacob, James and Jacques are one name in three languages, and every Jacqueline in the world is a small female James.

Pronouncing Jacquelene
JAK-wuh-leen
Three syllables with the stress at the front in American English, and a light final syllable. The cqu is said as a plain k in French, giving zhah-kuh-LEEN; American speakers put a w in it, which is the sound of the qu doing what English qu normally does.

Fashion outlook
Jacquelene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A long, formal name with a very short, very familiar everyday form waiting inside it.
- It is recognizable across French, Dutch, Spanish and Italian as a member of the same family.
- The full name reads as grown-up on paper without being heavy in speech.
- The spelling is genuinely difficult, and this version changes the ending as well, so it will be got wrong twice.
- Jacqueline is the standard form by a very wide margin and will be assumed by anyone writing from dictation.
- Jackie takes over completely for most bearers, and Jackie is shared with men.
