Jacqualyn
Feminine · “supplanter”
Jacqualyn carries a spelling that trips every English reader who meets it cold. In French, qu says a plain k — quatre, qui, quand — and English readers expect kw, because that is what the letters do in queen and quick. So a name that French says in two syllables gets stretched to four by anybody guessing from the page.

The story of Jacqualyn
The qu spelling is a Latin inheritance that French kept and stopped sounding. Latin wrote qu for a genuine k-plus-w sound, and it survived into Old French; over several centuries the w faded out of most words while the spelling stayed exactly where it was. English, which borrowed a great many French words, kept the sound in some and lost it in others, which is why queen has a w and quiche does not. Every English reader has learned this list one word at a time, and a French name in an American register is precisely the place where the learning tends to fail.

supplanter, at several removes
Behind the French Jacques stands Jacob, whose Hebrew name is explained in Genesis as being about a heel and a supplanting — an explanation that reads more like a pun on the story than an etymology. French built a feminine with its own ending, English borrowed it in the last century, and American families then added the ending that was fashionable when they did so, producing this four-syllable version of a two-syllable name.
How the name formed
- Hebrew Jacob, explained in Genesis by a pun
- French produces Jacques and its feminine
- the qu spelling loses its w in French and keeps it in English
- Jacqueline enters English use in the twentieth century
- American families add a fashionable ending
