Where it comes from

Our story of Jacqlyn

French writes qu for a hard k, and it needs a vowel after the qu for the spelling to function at all. Jacqueline has that vowel: the ue is doing real work, keeping the consonant hard and carrying the syllable. Take it out and the qu is left with nothing to lean on, which is why this spelling looks slightly impossible to anybody who knows French. In English it does not matter, because English readers process the cq as a single k sound and move on. The spelling is therefore French to the eye and English to the ear, which is a fair description of what happens to a great many borrowed names.

Jacqlyn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1987, with 34 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Jacqlyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It writes the name the way it is usually said, which is a defensible thing for a spelling to do.
  • Jackie is available as a short form and needs no explaining anywhere.
  • It is shorter than the standard spelling and easier for a child to write.
What to consider
  • Jacqueline and Jaclyn are both commoner, so this spelling will be corrected regularly.
  • The cq will look like an error to anybody who knows the French name.
  • No reason for the spelling is documented, so there is nothing to say when someone asks why.
