Jackqueline adds a k to a spelling that already had two letters doing that job. The French cqu is a three-letter sequence spelling a single k sound, and inserting another k in front of it produces four letters for one consonant, which is about as much redundancy as an English name can carry without falling over.

Where it comes from

The story of Jackqueline

English has no device for making a woman's name from a man's, and French does. The French ending used here is a diminutive that attaches to a man's name and produces a woman's, regularly and productively, and French has used it that way for centuries: it built this name, and Micheline, and Josephine, and a long list of others. English speakers borrowing those names borrowed the results and not the machinery, which is why the ending is not available in English for new formations and why English keeps having to improvise a feminine from scratch. The redundancy in this spelling is a small symptom of that: a borrowed name being decorated by speakers with no feel for how it was assembled.

supplanter

The name descends through Latin and Greek from the Hebrew name behind Jacob, and the traditional reading is a pun made inside the biblical text rather than an etymology. The French feminine ending contributes affection rather than sense, and the added k contributes nothing at all except length.

How the name formed

  1. A Hebrew name behind both Jacob and James
  2. Jacques in French, with a productive feminine ending
  3. Jacqueline borrowed whole into English
  4. Jackqueline, with a redundant k inserted

Jackqueline sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1961, with 64 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Jackqueline sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is universally known and never needs explaining.
  • Jackie is immediate and understood everywhere in the English-speaking world.
  • The k makes the pronunciation of the opening unmistakable to an English reader.
What to consider
  • Four letters for one sound means a long spelling-out on the telephone.
  • Jacqueline is the standard spelling and this will be corrected into it constantly.
  • It is closely tied to a mid-century American generation.
