Jackey adds a letter to a familiar form and the record holds it almost entirely for sons. The word it spells has done more work in English than almost any other four letters: once a name became a generic word for a man, it started naming every machine that did a man's job.

Where it comes from

The story of Jackey

Once Jack had become the standard English word for an ordinary man — every man Jack, jack of all trades, jack tar for a sailor — it began attaching itself to anything that did a man's work. A jack lifts a cart the way a strong man would. A boot-jack pulls off boots. A smoke-jack turned a roasting spit in a chimney, and a jack in a lock is the piece that does the holding. The knave in a deck of cards is a jack because he is the servant figure. A jackhammer, a car jack, a phone jack and a hydraulic jack are all the same metaphor, several centuries apart. The pattern is not unique — a crane is named after a bird and a donkey engine after an animal — but no other English personal name has spread this far into the toolbox.

Meaningscholars disagree

probably from John, by way of Jack

Jack came into English from a French diminutive of John rather than from Jacques, which is the usual and incorrect assumption. Whether a given bearer of this spelling descends from that or from Jacqueline is not recorded, and the record holds it for children of both sexes.

Jackey sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1956, with 31 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Jackey sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Jack comes off it at once and is understood everywhere.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy and quick.
What to consider
  • Jackie and Jacky are both far commoner and will be written for it.
  • The added letter is silent, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • It reads as a familiar form, and people will ask what it stands for.
