Ivery is recorded for boys and girls alike and has two plausible roads behind it: the English word ivory written differently, or a Norman place name that came to England with the Conquest. The word itself has traveled further than either.

Where it comes from

Our story of Ivery

The Latin for ivory is ebur, and the Greek elephas gave Europe its word for the animal. Neither is believed to be native. The best-supported account traces both back to an Egyptian word for the elephant and for the tusk, which passed into the Mediterranean languages along with the material itself, because Egypt was where the trade came through. So a word that sounds thoroughly European is carrying a piece of Egyptian vocabulary that entered Greek and Latin before either had a literature. The trade that brought it has a great deal of blood in it, then and now, and that is worth knowing too. But the word is very old, and it arrived the way words do: attached to a thing that people wanted.

Not established

If the name is ivory, it is a material used as a name, which English does often enough. If it is the Norman Ivry, it is a place in France. Nothing in the record distinguishes the two, and the spelling supports both equally.

Ivery sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1919, with 19 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Ivery sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so it is never mispronounced by anyone who has heard it.
  • Ivy comes off the front as a short form and is thoroughly established on its own.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
What to consider
  • Ivory is the expected spelling, and this version will be corrected to it by nearly everyone.
  • The material itself carries a heavy association with the killing of elephants, and that is a conversation the name will eventually have.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has two answers and no settled one.
