The story of Island
Igland had no s for eight hundred years; Renaissance scholars added one to make it look like the Latin insula, which it has nothing to do with, and the spelling stuck. Debt and doubt gained their silent letters the same way. Island entered American given-name use recently and is in current use.
Meaning
island
From the Old English igland — ig, 'island', and land. The s was inserted in the sixteenth century by scholars who wrongly associated it with the Old French isle and the Latin insula. The two words are unrelated. The error is documented.

The Calie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Island's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Calie climbed just as high around 2008, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Calie's path sketches the road Island is walking now.
Island sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
