Where it comes from

The story of Isidoro

The bearer who matters most is Isidore of Seville, a Visigothic bishop in seventh-century Spain who set out to write down everything anyone knew. The result, the Etymologies, is twenty books covering grammar, medicine, law, animals, ships, food, war and the shape of the world, organized on the theory that the origin of a word reveals the nature of the thing. It was wrong about a great deal and it was copied everywhere, becoming one of the most read books in medieval Europe and the ancestor of every encyclopedia since. Because of that, and because he tried to gather all knowledge into one searchable place, he has been proposed as the patron saint of the internet.

Meaning

Gift of Isis

Greek Isidoros joins the goddess's name to doron, a gift, and it belongs to a large family of names formed the same way: Theodore, gift of God; Diodorus, gift of Zeus; Heliodorus, gift of the sun. The formula was ordinary. That the name survived the end of the cult it refers to, and was carried by bishops and saints for a thousand years afterwards, says something about how names outlive the beliefs that made them.

Fashion outlook

Isidoro sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It works unchanged in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, and is recognizable in French and Greek.
  • The meaning is transparent, checkable and connected to a genuinely interesting person.
  • Four syllables give it real formality, and there are short forms in two languages underneath.
What to consider
  • English speakers will reach for Isidore, the shorter form, and drop the final vowel.
  • The name is dated in Spanish-speaking countries as well, and reads as a grandfather's name there too.
  • A name honoring an Egyptian goddess may need explaining to families who expect saints' names to be Christian throughout.
