Isamu Noguchi, the son of a Japanese poet and an American writer, became one of the great sculptors and designers of the century, maker of the paper Akari lamps and the Noguchi table; when Japanese Americans were forced into camps, he entered one in the Arizona desert voluntarily, hoping to help, and then found it hard to leave. Isamu Akasaki, a Japanese physicist, spent decades on a problem most had abandoned and shared the Nobel Prize for the efficient blue LED, which made white LED lighting possible.
