The story of Irven
Washington Irving was born in Manhattan in the last months of the war, and his mother named him after the general — the war had just been won and there were a great many small Washingtons that year. What makes his case unusual is that a Scottish maid took the child, aged six, into a shop where the President happened to be, said this boy is named after you, and Washington put his hand on the child's head. Irving remembered it all his life and eventually wrote the man's biography, in five volumes, finishing it a few months before he died. He is also the reason the name Irving became a first name at all.
Meaningscholars disagree
from a Scottish place name
Irving and Irvine are Scottish, from a river and the town beside it in Ayrshire, and the family that took the name from the place carried it to Ulster and then to America. A separate Germanic name of similar sound has been mixed into it along the way, which is why reference books hedge. The ending is where the American spellings diverge: Irving, Irvin, Irven and Irvine all appear in the record, and the difference between them is a matter of which clerk was writing.

Fashion outlook
Irven sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It has a real Scottish place behind it and a serious literary namesake in America.
- Irv is short, plain and has aged better than the full name.
- It is genuinely rare while sounding entirely ordinary.
- Irving is far commoner and will be substituted on nearly every document.
- The name reads as belonging to the early twentieth century and has had no revival.
- The ending carries no meaning of its own, so nothing distinguishes this spelling but the look of it.
