The story of Iridian
In Greek, Iris was the rainbow and the goddess who traveled along it carrying messages. Greek nouns often show their full stem only when they change form, and iris becomes iridos in the genitive, which is why English says iridescent and not irisescent. When the chemist Smithson Tennant isolated a new metal in London at the start of the nineteenth century, he named it iridium because its salts came in so many colors. Iridian takes the same stem and turns it into a name.
