Ilo is three letters and belongs to daughters and sons alike. It is an ordinary Finnish noun, it is also the kind of short entry that American paperwork produces on its own, and the record does not say which any given family meant.

Our story of Ilo
Finnish does two things that surprise speakers of most European languages. It has no future tense: a Finn says the equivalent of I go tomorrow, and the time word does the work a verb ending does in English. And it has one pronoun for a person, used for a man, a woman or anyone else, with no gendered alternative available — a Finnish speaker telling a story in Finnish simply does not specify, and Finnish speakers learning English are notorious for mixing up he and she because the distinction is not one their language asks them to make. The language also has fifteen noun cases, which is what makes it look forbidding from outside, and an almost perfect spelling system, which makes it far easier to read aloud than English. A name taken from a language built like that arrives in America with none of that visible.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The Finnish word means joy, and the name appeared in American records during the decades of heaviest Finnish immigration, which is suggestive but not proof. It could equally be a set of initials run together, a clipping of a longer name, or an independent build. No source is documented for any particular family.
Pronouncing Ilo
EE-loh
Two syllables with the stress at the front, as Finnish always places it. English readers often say EYE-loh instead, and both are heard in American families.

Fashion outlook
Ilo sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Three letters fit any field on any form and cannot be misspelled once heard.
- It works for a child of either sex without alteration.
- The Finnish sense behind it, where that is the source, is about as pleasant as a meaning gets.
- English readers will say the first vowel two different ways.
- Very short entries are rejected by some databases outright.
- Nothing records where any particular family got it, so the Finnish reading is a likelihood rather than a fact.
