The story of Idabelle

Ida Lewis kept the Lime Rock lighthouse in Newport harbor for decades and rowed out in storms to rescue at least eighteen people, becoming one of the most famous women in America in the 1860s and 1870s. In 1884 Ida B. Wells, a young teacher in Tennessee, refused to move from the ladies' car of a train to the car for Black passengers, was dragged off, and sued the railroad; she went on to lead the campaign against lynching. Idabelle, joining Ida to Belle, was one of the double names of the late nineteenth century.
