Icie has two letter i's doing two different jobs. The first is long, as in ice; the second is short, as in the ending of any English pet form. Nothing in the spelling says so, and a reader who gives both the same value produces a name nobody would recognize.

Where it comes from

Our story of Icie

The word itself is old enough to have its own letter. In the runic alphabets each character had a name, and the one for the i-sound was the word for ice; the rune poems that survive describe each character in a verse, and the verses about this one are the best in the set. The Old English poem calls ice very cold and immeasurably slippery, glistening clear as glass, most like to gems, a floor wrought by the frost. The Norwegian poem is blunter and better: ice, it says, is the broad bridge — and adds that the blind man must be led. A whole winter's danger and a whole winter's convenience in nine words.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The source cannot be established. It may be the English word with a pet ending, it may be a shortening of a longer name, and it may be a spelling of initials, all of which were ordinary practice in the American South when this name appears. Nothing in the record distinguishes them, and the word reading is only the most obvious of the three.

How the name formed

  1. An old English word with its own runic character
  2. American families using short word names freely
  3. A pet ending attached to it
  4. Icie in the registers before 1900

Icie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1915, with 42 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Icie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, clear and cannot be mispronounced once heard.
  • It carries a concrete English word with a very long history.
  • It is genuinely rare while being made of the simplest material.
What to consider
  • It will be read as the weather word, because it is the weather word.
  • No source can be given, and three explanations are equally likely.
  • It is firmly of the nineteenth century in American records.
