Where it comes from

Our story of Hubbard

Old Mother Hubbard was published as an illustrated booklet in the early eighteen-hundreds and sold tens of thousands of copies almost immediately, which for the period was extraordinary. The verses are a sequence of absurdities: the woman goes out for something, comes back, and the dog is doing something impossible. It is nonsense of the purest kind, several decades before nonsense became a recognized genre, and it was written by a woman staying at a country house who appears to have produced it to amuse the family. The name is now also a squash, a loose dress, and a small town or two, all of them pointing back at the rhyme.

Hubbard sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1930, with 21 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Hubbard sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at first sight and never needs spelling out loud.
  • It sits in the familiar family of surnames Americans use in front position.
  • Hub and Bard are both available as short forms and both are real words.
What to consider
  • The nursery rhyme is the first association for anybody who was read to as a child.
  • It reads as a surname to nearly everybody, which suits some families and not others.
  • No origin is documented for the first name, so the meaning question has nothing settled behind it.
