Hortencia
Feminine · “of the garden”
In 42 BC a woman named Hortensia stood in the Roman Forum and argued the state out of a tax. The triumvirs had levied on the property of fourteen hundred wealthy women to fund a civil war; Hortensia, whose father had been the great orator of the previous generation, made the case against it in public and the levy was cut sharply. It is one of the few recorded speeches by a Roman woman.

The story of Hortencia
Quintus Hortensius Hortalus was Cicero's great rival at the bar, and his daughter's speech in the Forum is preserved in outline by later historians who were plainly impressed. The family name passed into the late Roman naming stock and then into the church calendar. Spanish kept it as Hortensia and Portuguese as Hortência, and Spanish spelling writes with a c what Latin wrote with an s — which is where this version comes from. American records carry it with Mexican families in particular, and it belongs mostly to the first half of the twentieth century here.
Meaning
of the garden
From the Latin hortus, a garden — the Hortensius family name means something like gardener. The hydrangea is called hortensia in most European languages, named in the eighteenth century after a Frenchwoman, so the flower takes its name from the name rather than the other way around.

Four syllables, stress on the second. The h is silent in Spanish. In Latin America the c before i is a plain s; in Spain it would be a th, which is why the s-spelling is preferred there.

The Lurline test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Hortencia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lurline climbed just as high around 1913, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lurline's path sketches the road Hortencia is walking now.
Hortencia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
