Where it comes from

Our story of Hoang

In imperial China yellow was the emperor's color, associated with the earth at the center of the five directions, and its use was restricted by law: the robes, the roof tiles of the palace, the imperial seals. Ordinary people wearing it in the wrong context committed an offense. Vietnam, which ran a court on the Chinese model for centuries, observed a version of the same rule, which is why the word for yellow also carries a sense of royal and why it turns up in the names of dynasties and citadels. A color that anybody can see, reserved by statute for one household, is one of the purer examples of how status was made visible.

The Vietnamese word means yellow and, by extension, royal. The tone mark that distinguishes it is stripped by American records, and whether a given Hoang is carrying the family name or the given name is not recoverable.

Hoang sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1982, with 53 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Hoang sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable and five letters: quick to write and easy to learn.
  • It is immediately legible to a very large community and genuinely rare outside it.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it does not force a reading on anyone.
What to consider
  • The tone mark that completes the name is stripped by American paperwork.
  • English readers will try to give it two syllables, which is the usual correction.
  • It is a family name as well as a given one, which anybody Vietnamese will notice.
