The story of Hiawatha
The historical Hiawatha helped found a state. Working with the figure remembered as the Peacemaker, he persuaded five warring nations — Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca — to stop fighting each other and join under a single constitution, the Great Law of Peace. That league held for centuries and was still functioning when Europeans arrived to negotiate with it. Its law was not written on paper: it was recorded in wampum, belts of shell beads whose patterns fixed the agreements, kept by appointed men and recited aloud at intervals so that the record stayed alive in memory as well as in the beads. A constitution you have to say out loud to keep is a different kind of document from one you file.

The Mohawk name is usually written Hayenwatha, and the readings offered for it — he who combs, he who makes rivers — come from stories told about him rather than from a settled analysis. The spelling English uses came through a chain of transcriptions by people who did not speak the language, which is where most of the uncertainty lies.
How the name formed

Four syllables with the stress on the third. The Mohawk name is said quite differently, and the English version is a transcription of a transcription.

Fashion outlook
Hiawatha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It carries a documented founder of a genuine political institution, which almost no name can claim.
- The rhythm is strong and memorable, and nobody forgets meeting it.
- It is read correctly on sight by almost every American.
- The poem is what most people know, and it put this name on a story from a different nation entirely — a confusion he will meet repeatedly.
- It is a name from a living tradition, which raises a fair question about who is using it and why.
- Most children with this spelling are boys, but a real minority are girls; either may be taken for the other.
