The story of Hervey
The Harvey who mattered most showed that the blood goes round and was disbelieved for twenty years. William Harvey demonstrated by measurement rather than argument that the heart pumps a volume of blood far too large to be manufactured and consumed as the standard theory required, and that it therefore must circulate; the book is short, the reasoning is close to arithmetic, and the medical establishment rejected it more or less unanimously. He said afterwards that his practice fell off badly and that he was thought crack-brained. He lived long enough to see it accepted, which is more than most people in that position manage.
Meaning
Battle worthy
The Breton name joins an element about battle to one meaning worthy or fit, and it arrived in England with Bretons in the Norman army. Both halves are Celtic rather than Germanic, which is unusual for a name that came over in eleven sixty-six, and the meaning has been stable throughout.

Fashion outlook
Hervey sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, firm and easy to spell, with a documented Breton and Norman history.
- The meaning is concrete and can be given to a child in two words.
- It is genuinely rare while sounding entirely familiar.
- Harvey is far commoner and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
- It reads as a surname and will be entered in the wrong column on forms.
- It is strongly dated to the nineteenth century in American records.
