Herbie is the friendly form of a stiff Norman name, and in America it has been attached to two things that could not be less alike: one of the most restlessly inventive musicians of the last century, and a Volkswagen with a mind of its own. Both are genuinely famous, and between them they have done more for the name than the formal version ever did.

Where it comes from

The story of Herbie

Herbie Hancock has spent sixty years annoying people who had just got used to him. He was playing in Miles Davis's quintet in his early twenties, left to write one of the most-covered jazz tunes of the decade, then plugged in — electric piano, synthesisers, a funk band called the Headhunters — and was accused of abandoning jazz by people who had bought his earlier records. Ten years later he did it again with a scratch-DJ single that won a Grammy and put a jazz musician on music television. He has never stayed put long enough to be a monument, which is the most consistent thing about him.

Meaning

bright army

Herbert is a Germanic compound of the ordinary kind — a word for an army and a word for brightness or fame, welded together the way early Germanic names nearly always were. It came into England with the Normans, went quiet, and was revived in the nineteenth century along with a great many other Old Germanic names. The pet form is much younger than the name and has always been warmer than it: nobody has ever been introduced as Herbie in a formal setting and stayed formal afterwards.

How the name formed

  1. a Germanic compound of army and brightness
  2. Herbert arrives in England with the Normans
  3. revived as a Victorian first name
  4. Herbie emerges as the American pet form
  5. a jazz pianist and a Disney car carry it forward

Herbie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1959, with 45 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Herbie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is warm on sight, which very few men's names manage without becoming twee.
  • Herb and Bert are both available as the boy gets older and wants something plainer.
  • The famous bearers are a musician and a car, which is an unusually low-pressure inheritance.
What to consider
  • Disney's Volkswagen is the first association for most Americans and it is not going away.
  • It reads as a pet form, so people will assume a Herbert on the certificate.
  • The formal name behind it is currently out of fashion, which leaves the short form standing alone.
