Where it comes from

The story of Henery

Harry is not a nickname for Henry. It is how English said Henry, for centuries, before the spelling settled: the French form arrived after the Conquest, English mouths turned the middle of it into an r sound, and Harry was the ordinary spoken version of the name that clerks wrote as Henricus. Every English king called Henry was called Harry to his face and in the popular speech of his reign, which is why Shakespeare can have soldiers shouting for Harry when the man's regnal name is Henry. The two only became separate names when literacy spread far enough that the written form started correcting the spoken one.

Meaning

ruler of the household

Two Germanic elements, the first meaning home or estate and the second meaning ruler. The compound describes authority over a place rather than over people, which is a smaller and more domestic claim than most royal names make.

Henery sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1928, with 61 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Henery sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling records how the name is actually said rather than how it is written.
  • The short forms are numerous and have quite different characters.
  • The name underneath is among the most durable in English.
What to consider
  • Henry is the standard spelling and this will be corrected for life.
  • The extra letter looks like an error rather than a transcription.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
