Where it comes from

The story of Helmer

The most famous door in the history of the stage closes behind a woman leaving a house, and the husband she leaves is called Helmer. The play ends on the sound. When it was first performed the ending was thought so unacceptable that the author was pressured into writing an alternative in which she stays — he called it a barbaric outrage and supplied it anyway, to stop other people rewriting it worse — and the original ending was restored almost everywhere within a few years. The sound of that door is routinely described as the moment modern drama starts.

Meaning

Helmet warrior

The Norse elements are hjalmr, a helmet, and a second element about a warrior or about fame. The helmet element is one of the commonest in Germanic naming and sits inside Wilhelm, Anselm and Helmut as well.

Helmer sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 37 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Helmer sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and can be taken apart piece by piece.
  • It is short, firm and read correctly on sight.
  • It is genuinely rare in American use.
What to consider
  • For anybody who knows the play, the name belongs to the husband rather than to the heroine.
  • It is strongly marked as Scandinavian.
  • The name is closely tied to one immigrant generation.
