The story of Helene
Helen of Troy is the earliest bearer in the literature, but the name owes its European spread to a later one: Helena, the mother of Constantine, who was said to have found the True Cross in Jerusalem and became a saint in both the Eastern and Western churches. French made Hélène, and English-speaking countries borrowed it with and without the accent. American use of Helene peaked around 1918.
Meaningscholars disagree
Not established
Helen's Greek origin is genuinely unsettled. The commonest suggestion connects it to helene, 'torch' or 'basket', or to a root meaning to shine — hence the frequently repeated 'bright' — but none of these is established, and the name may be pre-Greek. The uncertainty is old: even ancient writers were guessing.

The Elma test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Helene's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Elma climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Elma's path sketches the road Helene is walking now.
Helene sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
