The story of Hebert
The surname is one of the founding Acadian names. Acadian families were deported from what is now Nova Scotia by the British in the 1750s — put on ships, separated from one another, and scattered along the Atlantic coast and back to Europe; a large number eventually made their way to Spanish Louisiana, where their descendants became the Cajuns. The surnames that arrived that way are still concentrated there in numbers that make no sense on a national map: a handful of family names, held by tens of thousands of people, all of them within a few parishes of each other.
