Harvie is a Scottish surname spelling of Harvey, and Harvey is Breton. The saint behind it is one of the strangest figures in the Breton calendar: a blind traveling singer who is always shown with a wolf beside him, because the wolf ate his donkey and he made it pull the plow instead. The name is having a small revival, and this spelling belongs to it.

The story of Harvie
Herve was born blind, according to the tradition, and made his living as a traveling singer and teacher with a boy to lead him. The wolf story is the one that stuck: it killed the donkey that carried his goods, and instead of hunting it down he yoked it to the plow in the donkey's place, and it stayed. He is invoked against eye trouble and is one of the most popular saints in Brittany, where the name has never gone out of use. English took it as a first name after the conquest, then let it decline into a surname, and then took it back as a first name in the nineteenth century, which is a common enough round trip. This spelling with -ie came out of Scotland, where it is a settled surname form, and it has arrived in modern American use looking like a modern respelling when it is nothing of the kind.

battle-worthy
The Breton name is usually read as a compound of words for battle and worth or ardor, and that reading is the standard one. It is not certain: Breton is thinly recorded for the period the name comes from, and the elements have been read differently by different scholars. What is not in doubt is the route, which runs from Brittany into England with the Norman conquest, and from an English surname back into use as a first name much later.
How the name formed
- A Breton compound about battle and worth
- Carried into England after the conquest
- Declining into an English surname
- Harvie as the Scottish surname spelling, revived

HAR-vee
Two syllables, stress on the first, and identical to Harvey in speech. The -ie ending is a Scottish surname convention rather than a diminutive here, so it does not soften the name the way it would on a first name.

Fashion outlook
Harvie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is completely familiar while the spelling is not, which is an unusually comfortable combination.
- It works on the register for either child, and it has always done so.
- It has a real Breton saint behind it with a story worth telling.
- Harvey is the spelling everyone knows, and this one will be converted into it regularly.
- The name reads as a surname to many people, which is accurate and still needs explaining.
- The current wave is very recent, so the name has no settled generational feel yet.
